Band cells or bands are immature neutrophils that appear in larger numbers in the bloodstream in response to stress or especially bacterial infection. Thus your child's doctor looks at the band count (as a percentage of all white cells) as an indicator of more serious illness. These cells are also occasionally referred to as "stabs."
