Cri du chat syndrome

Cri du chat syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality caused by partial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 5. Babies affected with this syndrome have a characteristicly weak, cat-like cry. Hence the name Cri du chat, French for "cry of the cat."

These unfortunate children also exhibit microcephaly (small brain size), mental retardation, and congenital heart disease.
