head banging

This behavior can occur in different contexts:

  • the child who bangs her head on the crib to fall asleep - harmless and common; outgrown.
  • the child who bangs her head on the floor for her tantrum. Ignore, ignore, ignore.
  • the child with severe developmental disability- talk to your child's occupational therapist about interventions to help reduce this.

Head banging of the first type is self-stimulatory behavior and often is simply a reflection of boredom. Head banging of the second type is emotional terrorism - don't give in to it.
