nevus, congenital melanocytic

These nevi are found anywhere on the body surface. They are brown to black in color, and vary in texture from flat to nodular or even leathery. They tend to become more elevated over time and may develop long, coarse hairs.

Giant hairy nevus is the term given to this nevus when it is greater than 6-8 inches in diameter (adult size). These usually occur over the midline of the back but may arise elsewhere. Because these birthmarks can have significant malignant potential as well possible association with neurological problems, patients with these lesions are referred for plastic surgical consultation about removal. Removal can be very difficult proposition, however, because of the large size.
