If the foreskin of an uncircumcised boy is forcibly retracted (never recommended!) and is left behind the glans penis, it can constrict the glans and cause painful swelling. Like a ring stuck on a finger that has been stung by a bee, the tourniquet effect can cause so much swelling that the foreskin can no longer be drawn forward. This calamity can necessitate an emergency dorsal slit operation or circumcision, because if it is left untreated, the glans penis could literally die and need to be amputated. See phimosis
