poison centers

All parents of young children should keep the number for their nearest poison control center prominently displayed on the phone or the refrigerator. A poison control center is an information resource. Trained personnel advise callers about what to do in the event of a known or suspected ingestion or exposure to a potentially harmful medication or substance. In addition to information about drug overdosages and ingestions, they have access to extensive databases of ingredients in cleaning preparations and other household chemicals, potentially toxic plants, and so forth. A call to the poison center can potentially save a trip to the emergency room, or ensure that a patient gets needed treatment without delay.
