simethicone

Simethicone is basically a detergent substance that makes little bubbles into big ones. Theoretically, big bubbles cramp less than small ones - at least they are supposed to pass faster (I suppose that makes sense). It is sold as a remedy for colic. Scientific studies of this in human babies have been fairly disappointing. However, it is inert and harmless, and so there is no harm in trying it. I always recommend that parents do all the other things we teach to avoid excessive gas first before trying a medication, however. Simethicone is sold under the names Mylicon® and Phazyme® among others.
