A symptom is a reported manifestation of an illness or condition. For example, if a patient reports that he felt nauseated, that is a symptom. If he vomits three times in 24 hours, that is a sign of illness. This distinction is one of the little semantic traps that professors and senior residents occasionally use to torment medical students on rounds.
